A Barefoot Dream was recently selected as Korea ’s submission to the 2011 ACADEMY AWARDS ‘BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM’ category

A Barefoot Dream is based on the true story of the East Timor youth soccer team, which rose from the poverty and ashes of civil war to win 2 international youth football championships after just a little over a year of practice. The key figure in this uplifting story is former Korean soccer player Kim Won-Kwang, who left home in search of a new direction in life and a new adventure. His travels took him to the small island country of East Timor, where he overcame the adversities of his new life and found a silver lining in his failed business that changed both his life and the lives of the children of East Timor forever.

Kim Tae-Gyun – Director
One of the most prolific Directors in Korea, Kim Tae-Gyun first learned about the story of the Korean coach in East Timor through a television documentary about him. Mr. Kim wondered what made him sacrifice everything to coach the kids. He also wondered what made the kids so passionate about the sport when their lives were so bleak. He wanted to look into their special friendship. Mr. Kim’s previous work shows he is a very versatile filmmaker. His groundbreaking martial arts fantasy ‘Volcano High’ was a huge hit around the world. It inspired so many hip hop artists that it was aired on MTV with the new soundtrack and dubbed with the all star hip hop cast including Snoop Dog and Andre 3000. He followed the film with a couple of youthful romancers such as ‘Romance of Their Own’ and ‘A Millionaires First Love.’ Then, he made ‘Crossing’, a tragic journey of a North Korean refugee. The film won the Best Picture at the Hollywood Film Festival and was the Korean entry for the Oscars in 2008.

Park Hee-Soon – Lead Actor

The hero Kim Won-Kwang, based on the real life Korean coach Kim Shin-Hwan is played by a veteran actor Park Hee-Soon who is best known for his role in ‘Seven Days’. Mr. Park is one of the most gifted Korean actors of his generation and has previously played many strong charismatic characters.
